Checkerboard Table Mat
A small two-color patchwork mat with sixteen squares, a clear pressing plan and full quilting and binding instructions.

Written draft - maker testing pending. Cutting and assembly calculations have been reviewed; this design has not been physically sewn and tested.
Measurements
Pieced top: 12.5 x 12.5 in before quilting and binding. The sixteen-patch design spans a nominal 12 x 12 in between outer seam lines. The bound item will vary slightly with quilting, trimming and washing.
Materials & tools
- Two contrasting quilting cottons, A (sage) and B (ivory): one fat quarter of each, at least 18 x 20 in usable fabric. This is a planning allowance, not measured consumption.
- Backing: one piece at least 20.5 x 20.5 in; batting at least 20.5 x 20.5 in, or more if required by your quilting method.
- Binding: two strips 2.5 x 40 in of quilting cotton, assuming 40 in usable width. Allow a little extra if the actual usable width is shorter.
- Sewing machine, coordinating thread, rotary cutter and mat, quilting ruler, iron, pins or clips, basting supplies, quilting foot and hand-sewing needle.

Step-by-step construction
- Cut and arrange16 squares; 4 rows
Cut eight A squares and eight B squares at 3.5 x 3.5 in. Arrange four rows of four using the checkerboard layout.
- Sew the four rowsEach row: 12.5 x 3.5 in
With right sides together and 1/4-in seams, sew the four squares in each row in their arranged order. Press rows 1 and 3 right; rows 2 and 4 left.
- Join the rowsTop: 12.5 x 12.5 in
Join row 1 to 2, then add rows 3 and 4. Match and nest the intersections, pin, then sew each full seam with a 1/4-in allowance. Press the long joining seams to one side or open as your fabric permits.
- Prepare the quilt sandwich
Press the top flat. Cut backing and batting 8 in larger than the top in both directions, giving about 4 in extra on every side. Follow the batting maker's requirements, and allow more backing if your quilting setup requires it. Lay the backing wrong side up, batting above it, then the top right side up. Smooth without stretching and baste from the center outward.
- Quilt and square
With a walking foot or another method suited to your machine, quilt simple straight lines beside the seams or a balanced grid. Follow the batting label's maximum spacing between quilting lines. Check the back for folds while working. After quilting, trim excess backing and batting flush with the squared quilt top; do not trim a fixed amount off the top simply to force a nominal size.
- Prepare the binding
Join the two 2.5-in-wide binding strips with a diagonal seam, right sides together. Trim that seam to 1/4 in, press it open, then press the long strip in half lengthwise with wrong sides together. Verify the usable length listed for your project before attaching it. Start on a straight edge, away from a corner, leaving about 6 in of the starting binding tail unattached for the final join. Align the binding's raw edges with the quilt's front edge and sew with a 1/4-in seam allowance. Arrange strip joins away from corners.
- Turn each binding corner
Stop the seam 1/4 in before a corner and backstitch. Fold the unattached binding upward at 45 degrees, then fold it back down along the next edge so the new fold aligns with the corner. Begin sewing the next side at its top edge. Repeat at each corner, taking care not to stitch through an unintended tuck.
- Join the binding ends
As you return to the starting point, stop sewing with a gap of about 6 in between the attachment seams; keep both loose binding tails available. Lay those ends flat along the quilt edge, allowing an overlap equal to the unfolded binding width: 2.5 in here. Cut to that overlap, unfold the ends, and place them at right angles, right sides together. Sew a diagonal seam. Before trimming the seam, check that the binding lies flat around the gap without twisting. Trim to 1/4 in, press, refold and finish stitching the binding across the gap.
- Finish and record
Fold the binding over the outer edge to the back, covering the attachment seam. Hand-stitch it securely to the backing, forming neat corner miters. Remove any remaining basting. Check the seams and binding, then wash only as permitted by the fabrics and batting. Record the actual finished measurements. Quilting, squaring and washing can change size; these drafts do not promise an exact bound size.
A small patchwork project with clear checkpoints
This original written project uses a traditional checkerboard arrangement to practice cutting squares, consistent seams and matching intersections. There are no borders or pieced backing requirements. The finished piece is a decorative table mat, not a heat-resistant potholder.
The cutting and seam arithmetic have been reviewed, but a physical sample has not yet been sewn, quilted or washed. Follow the measured checkpoints as you work. Color letters describe placement; any two contrasting fabrics can replace the suggested sage and ivory.
Cut accurately and test your seam allowance
All piecing seams are 1/4 in. Cut squares with edges parallel to the fabric grain. Check each square before sewing rather than trimming assembled rows to compensate for inaccurate cuts. Press by lifting and setting the iron instead of dragging it across a small unit.
Sew two spare 3.5-in squares together. Their joined unit should measure 6.5 x 3.5 in before further assembly. If it does not, check cutting, seam placement and pressing before sewing the project. The first and last outer edges retain seam allowance; do not trim the completed top from 12.5 in down to 12 in.
Layout and pressing plan
Lay out four rows of four squares. Read the rows from left to right: A-B-A-B; B-A-B-A; A-B-A-B; B-A-B-A. Keep the layout visible while carrying squares to the machine. Label the rows if the two fabrics have similar colors.
Press the three joining seams in rows 1 and 3 to the right. Press those in rows 2 and 4 to the left. When joining rows, the opposing allowances can nest at the intersections. Pin the matching seams and check for a fold before sewing over them.
Before quilting
Each sewn row should measure 12.5 x 3.5 in. After the four rows are joined, the top should measure 12.5 x 12.5 in. A small difference deserves investigation before adding backing: identify whether it came from a cut, a seam or pressing. Do not stretch one row to make it fit another.
The backing and batting dimensions provide about 4 in extra around the top for a small domestic-machine setup. A longarm quilter or another process may need a larger allowance. Confirm that requirement before cutting.
Binding length and care
The unquilted top perimeter is 50 in. Prepare at least 62 in of usable continuous binding to allow for corners and the final join. Two 40-in strips joined diagonally should provide more than that, but measure the prepared strip before attachment.
Support the mat flat while sewing the binding. Follow the combined fabric and batting care requirements when washing. Measure the actual finished mat after it is fully dry and keep that result with your project notes.
